Vehicle sales in China continue to drop, NEV sales rise

hinese sales of passenger vehicles, MPVs, SUVs and minivans in March dropped 12 percent on a yearly basis to 1.78 million units.

This is the 10th consecutive monthly decrease, according to the C

hina Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Changjiang Times reported.

The MPV sector saw the largest sales decline, 20.2 percent to 130,000 units in the pas

t month, while SUVs and sedans dropped 10.7 and 12 percent, respectively.

The decreases in 2019’s first quarter are mild compared with those at the end of the last year, CPCA said.

As the State-VI emission standards will be implemented from July 1 this

year, some Japanese brands have launched corresponding products ahead of their co

unterparts, and performed well in sales and consumer confidence, CPCA said.

“Automobile sales in North China, and those in the county and township level, are still weak,” the association added.

Xu said the country’s urbanization may hit 70 percent by

“China’s urban development should take the road of sustainable development,” Xu said. “We sh

ould pay more attention to green city construction, green industrial development and low-carbon energy-saving de

velopment. And we should also ensure that migrant workers have the same social rights as native residents.”

The NDRC proposed the introduction of various monetary policies to reso

lutely curb the rise in hidden local government debt, encourage commercial financial institut

ions to appropriately increase the credit supply and support qualified enterprises to issue bonds for financing.

To implement the new urbanization tasks, China will improve the appro

priate positioning of different cities in various fields, develop high-end manufacturing and p

roducer services in big cities and guide small and medium-sized cities to consolidate manufacturing centers.

Xu Lin said with rapid urbanization, 80 percent of China’s urban citizens will live in some 20 city clusters in the future.

The core of Beijing’s high-quality development is to

better deal with the relationship between ‘capital’ and ‘city’, which is to strengthen the four funct

ions of Beijing — the national center of politics, culture, international communications and scient

ific innovation,” said Cai Qi, Party secretary of Beijing, last month during the two sessions.

According to the municipal authority, the new economy — industries with intensive innovation a

nd knowledge — now makes up 33 percent of the city’s economy, and this ratio is expected to keep growing.

President Xi Jinping’s three-nation visit to Europe last month prod

uced tangible fruits and showed that despite any differences that may exist between China and

the European Union, they have the common desire to strengthen cooperation.

Thanks to mutual efforts from both sides, China-EU interaction has been displaying good momentum. Over the years, their economic

interests have become increasingly intertwined, and people-to-people exchanges have flourished, formin

g a solid foundation on which bilateral ties have been able to grow and prosper in an all-around way.

Some 50 poor households of Shangyan Village used

to live on an inhospitable strech of benchland, which was a major cause of the poverty.

Local officials had attempted to help them get rid of poverty through relocation, one of China’s poverty-relief strategies to

encourage people striken by harsh natural conditions to move to livable places, offering them government subsidies.

But many villagers stubbornly refused to move, due to doubts and a lack of knowledge about related policies.

Soon after she assumed office, Ma set up a tent at the entrance of Shangyan Village to live temporarily there.

She knocked the doors of those reluctant to move, sat in their yards, and p

atiently answered their questions, including whether they would gain sufficient subsid

ies or get used to the new houses. After two weeks, 51 households signed the relocation agreement.

Ma has also led villagers to take tailored measures to increase their incomes based on each village’s conditions.

When Zhao Xueming, a middle school math teacher in Beij

“I was scared to the soul, and I thought about death every day,” he said.

By then, Zhao, who was 36 at the time, had received various treatme

nts at Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital for four months. However, he believed he had s

ome other liver disease, since his parents, in order to avoid frightening him, never told him the truth.

“The treatments didn’t work well,” he said. “At l

Zhao was lucky. He waited for just around two weeks for an available organ, which was distributed through a national compu

terized organ sharing system, and had an operation that lasted for more than 10 hours in March last year.

He later learned that the organ donor was a young person who died in a car accident

in Hubei province, more than 1,000 kilometers away, but he doesn’t know further details.

In March, a year after the surgery, Zhao enrolled to become an organ dono

Ardern met with Premier Li Keqiang on Monday morn

ing, and the two witnessed the signing of four cooperative documents to pr

omote cooperation in tax issues, agriculture, finance and science at a signing cer

emony. A joint declaration on climate change was also released after their meeting.

Zhao Jianglin, a researcher of Asia-Pacific economic studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the visit by Ardern

will provide a timely boost to China-New Zealand relations after the dispute over the use of Chinese telecom equipment.

China has been a key trade partner with New Zealand, which could also provide important s

A price cut swept China’s many sectors on Monday, as value-added tax rate reduction officially kicked in.

This year’s Government Work Report, which was released las

April 1 is a special day for fans of Leslie Cheung. This yea

arks the 16th anniversary of the death of the singer and actor due to depression.

“I am who I am, a different colored sparkle. I love myself, just like the blooming rose wa

iting to flourish even in the desert,” Leslie Cheung sang in one of his musical masterpieces I. He is consi

dered “one of the founding fathers of Cantopop” for achieving huge success both in film and music.

Starting his career as a singer in 1977, Cheung rose to fame six

years later thanks to the song The Wind Blows On. He has released many popular albums and r

eceived numerous music awards, including being honored as Asia’s Biggest Superstar at the 2000 CCTV-MTV Music Honors.

However, there’s much more to him, beyond his superior musical accomplishments. In the late 1980s, he shifted

his career focus to the movie industry and shaped many classic roles that no one can rival, even to this day.

Some have said you might not really know Leslie Cheung’s music, but you’ve probably seen at least one or two of his sentimental films.

“He is a top Asian giant, has exciting stage performances, astonishing beauty and excellent acting skills,” a CNN report once said about him.

The European leaders said they are glad to see a greater

development in China, and the EU welcomes China’s willingness to share its development opportunities.

Chinese enterprises are welcome to invest in European countries, said the European leaders, adding that they will not adopt restrictive measures against specific com

According to the 2018 International Energy Agency re

port, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rose by 1.7 percent to 33 gigatonnes last year, the highest level since

2013. Coal use in power generation alone surpassed 10 Gt, accounting for one-third of the total increase.

The fact that most of the increase in coal use comes from coal power plants in developing Asia points to the harsh reality that greenhouse gas emissions are the cost be

ing paid for development. That the majority of coal power plants in Asia are only 12 years old on average, decades short of the

average life span of around 50 years, shows how challenging it is to cut CO2 emissions and maintain economic growth.

That the developing countries obtain help from their developed co

unterparts in both funds and technologies is essential to the fight against global warming.

It is high time that countries appreciated the urgency of this comm

on challenge and how important it is for concerted efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

North Korea has yet to issue any direct public statement on

the decision to withdraw. Chad O’Carroll, an analyst and chief executive of the K

orea Risk Group, said the move was to be expected following the failure of the Hanoi summit.

”North Korea’s pull-out Friday from the Kaesong Lias

on Office has been on cards since Hanoi, given recent no-shows there,” he said on Twitter.

He added that the move was designed to send a message that from

Pyongyang’s perspective “Seoul has insufficient influence” over the US-North Korea rela

tionship and that intra-Korean talks are increasingly pointless, “when sanctions prevent practical cooperation.”

Following the Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi, the US and South Korea canceled major war ga

mes that have long been a source of tensions on the Korean Peninsula in order to “support diplomatic efforts” with Pyongyang.

Speaking on Thursday, Joseph Dunford, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he was “absolutely confide

nt” that smaller exercises held in place of the traditional war games enabled the US and South Korean forces to “maintain readiness.”
